Barney down the street is a shelter dog. I know this because his new owner introduced us that way as we passed. Barney dragging his new person in the direction of the park, his person already looking spent before they make it to the grass. I could have guessed that my neighbor and his new buddy hadn't had much time together without a word being said. People and dogs share the same confused look about the eyes when they aren't sure of each other. Barney is no doubt grateful he's got someone now to walk him, has plenty to eat and a warm place to sleep. Things he had without question before he became a shelter dog. Hopefully time and care will give him back the trust he lost. I think we might be finding ourselves at a point when there are more of us feeling like shelter dogs. If we were sure of ourselves a couple of years ago, we have little of that swagger left now. Even the Dungeness crabs are fewer and smaller this year, if my newspaper is to be believed. But then it comes up with new disasters religiously. And daily. What we can give each other to help us through these times of transition, and that is what they surely are, is the same as any shelter dog hopes for. Love in the form of kindnesses. An offer of reassurance in our firm belief in each other. And one thing more that we might not find in the bounce of a ball as Barney does. Nevertheless as vital. A few precious moments sharing simple joys. Then again, a bouncing ball might just be what makes the difference... And know that I'm behind you all the way-- Maureen
